How Interior Design Affects Mental Health
Interior design and your mental health are inextricably intertwined in ways that I believe can touch your nervous system and provide a peaceful retreat from the world. Let’s create a deeper sense of calm and peace through interior design - beautifully coordinated, well put together rooms and homes.
Throughout this blog I will help you with inspiration, organization tips, tricks, and hacks. Let’s find ways to optimally use every space, ensuring a place for everything. I believe your home can be beautifully pulled together, maximizing functionality, and providing a sanctuary for those inhabiting it. These together play a role in how interior design can be a tool to help positively affect your mental health.
Decluttering and staying organized is a great tool that can assist in providing a sense of control and calm environment. For a few tips on getting started, read my blog titled 6 Daily Rituals for Maintaining a Calm Haven Within Your Home. However, when it comes to truly supporting some of the issues surrounding mental health, I personally believe from my experience, it goes way beyond de-cluttering and staying on top of chores. The whole interior design: the pairing and planning of your interior layout, finishes, colours, and furnishings are fundamental to creating a calm and beautiful home you’re proud of.
With the right combination of elements and thoughtfulness within your home, interior design can induce positive emotions including pleasure, safety, and relaxation. An example of this, as researched and outlined in The National Library of Medicine (online), “spaces with curvilinear/curved features, in comparison with those with angular/rectilinear ones, were preferred among different ages, and induced higher positive emotions such as pleasure, relaxation, safety, privacy, and a desire to approach” Psychological Well-Being and Mental Health in Response to Interiors.
I believe your home is an extension of your personal self. It can be inviting, your personal haven from the impersonal outside world. It should operate with ease, storing and housing items conveniently, display personal items beautifully and create a retreat you love and are proud of.
“I believe that if you are true to expressing yourself, coupled with the right amount of discipline and routine, your space can reflect your personality, and you can turn your home into your haven.”
